Four years of college (a BA in psychology is usually preferable) + 5 years (minimum) to complete a Psy. D. degree. The 5 years includes the internship, which usually lasts about a year. There is no set age at which a person usually begins an internship. So many people get into psychology as a second career that there are people of all ages doing their internships. Assuming that you begin a Psy. D. program immediately after you graduate with your BA, you'd be about 26 when you began your internship. Yes, internships are paid, but the pay is usually quite low (in the range of $17 to $20 thousand a year).

    For the "average" student it's roughly; 2yrs college, 3yrs uni, 2yrs masters, & 3yrs doctorate, = 10yrs "full-time".
